Now Accepting New Students!

We are currently accepting applications for students for the 2012-13 school year!*

Our Approach to Learning

At the Livingschool, education is an individual process, in a group setting, which is made possible by our low student-teacher ratio. Individualized learning, through one-on-one and small-group lessons, conversation, activities, and play, is paramount. This unique learning cooperative in Joshua Tree, CA offers both academic school sessions for enrolled students and “enrichment” workshops, which are open to the larger community.

The children at the Livingschool develop a strong sense of independence, curiosity, and a joyful enthusiasm for learning!

Our two core teachers, Anna and Laura, have developed a unique program drawn from Waldorf and Montessori approaches to education, working within a Main Lesson Block framework, where students and teachers delve deep into a particular subject every morning for four weeks. Each Main Lesson Block is hand-crafted by the teachers, who accommodate the different learning styles and interests of the students, in each lesson plan. Examples of Main Lesson Blocks include: Stories of Heroes, Energy and Forces, Working with Numbers, and Zoology. Students record what they learn each block, in Main Lesson Books, which they keep in personal collections that they can look back on for their entire lives.

Through the practice of “Mindful Classroom” techniques, including morning meditation, the children learn to respect themselves, others, and the environment, as well as conflict resolution, through conversation and negotiation.

The Livingschool Community

The students gain a sense of the importance of school when they see their parent’s involvement. The parents gain greater insight into their own children by seeing them in a community of their peers.  A true sense of belonging results. Parents are encouraged to share their knowledge and talents through participation, including:

  • Serving on a committee (such as “Fundraising”)

  • Housekeeping and maintenance

  • Teaching workshops, which have included Ceramics, Music, Outdoor Education, “People and Plants,” Science, Spanish, Poetry and Yoga.
